11th November 2008
Onwards and upwards. Bury on Monday night with John. Took Mick Graves' flowers which I had fetched back from Stafford. Left there just before 10.00 up at 6.00 collected John at 7.30 back to Bury with our flowers for the League as well as some flowers for John. Spent all day there leaving at 7.00.
It was a good show, up to expectations, with some top growers competing.
Sowerby Bridge missed out on the big money by a point with Dukinfield taking the big prize with flowers from Jack Newton, Barry Bickerdyke and Len Whitehouse. My Trident let us down it been soft underneath. The best vase in the show went to D Ireland from Carnforth with a lovely vase of Kay Woolman.
The rest of the week I spent dressing my Amber Olwyn in preparation for our show on the Saturday. Unfortunately they weren't far enough out so they will go to to Northern Group show this weekend.
I had a poor show at ours only able to put in 14 flowers from a total in excess of 200. The best vases were won again by Peter Robinson and Peter Fawcett as last year. John Swift put in 90 flowers and as such took the Presidents Trophy for most points. It goes without saying that he is a very good grower. I forgot to take my camera so apart from a couple of photos from Peter showing the winning people I have nothing to show of our show.
Whilst judging was going on I slipped away to judge the Oldham show. It was nowhere as big as usual but there were some nice flowers including 6 Japs which I gave the Silver Medal to.
On Sunday I took Trish to see the Spen Valley show which was celebrating its 100th year. I will put some photos in the photos section. It was a good show with at least 3 times more entries than at our show. They had memorabilia from the past and I was surprised to see my name in a write up of the 75th show saying that I had won the best exhibit for a vase of West Brom. It was the first time that I had shown outside of Calderdale. It's frightening that it was 25 years ago.
