21st April 2010

Since my last diary entry, we have had the NCS AGM at Bournemouth. I had put my name forward for the executive but unfortunately did not get elected. I only polled 34 votes. There were 5 candidates for 3 positions and the 3 that got on polled in the 70s. However, it was a good weekend, the dinner was excellent, and I picked up my medal for Olwyn in the Society class for 6 blooms. I also picked up John Swifts medal for the old cultivar, which he won with Shirley Sunburst. Keith Atkinson brought home my Bryony Wade, and Frankie Charlton had taken my Clarksdale to the AGM, which I brought home myself. We flew down on the Friday afternoon, and flew back on the Sunday night: A lot quicker than driving!

On Monday the 29th, back home I sprayed for Greenfly and I have taken half a dozen new/ novice growers under my wing. And I intend speaking to them to see how they are doing on a three weekly basis. So I did that on the 30th of March.

As part of my spraying programme I sprayed with systhane on the Wednesday.

I am trying something different with Grace Holden this year. In that I took the tops from cuttings that I had rooted on the 17th of the 1st, and the 1st of the 2nd. Hoping to a) keep the size down, and b) get them to flower in November rather than the middle of October.

On Friday the 2nd of April, I sprayed again with Grow slow and it's amazing how it makes the plants stocky.

Monday the 5th of April I stopped the Wingfield family as well as putting the first stop on Roy Coopland.

On Saturday the 10th of April I potted up into 5 inch.
2 Kay Woolman
2 John Hughes
6 Bill Holden
5 Amber Olwyn
Which all went into the cold frame on Sunday the 11th

These were followed on Monday 12th by:
10 Olwyn
3 Grace Holden

on Wednesday the 14th of April, I potted up:
4 cream John Hughes
4 rose Patricia Millar
3 Cerise Patricia Miller
5 Roy Coopland

All my plants were sprayed with Rose Clear that day as well.

Monday the 19th of April I potted up 19 of the Wingfield family.
Yesterday Pauline White got its first stop.

Last Night I went to watch Scunthorpe United retain their status as a Championship side, and stayed at my mate Petes. This morning I called at Mick Graves to pick up some cuttings for Harrogate, where I will be tomorrow (Thursday) so if you are going, please call and see us in the Society tent.

With a bit of luck, there may be a couple of pictures on the diary this week. Fingers crossed
